The grotesque decorations under the Bank of Italy portico in Bologna
Designed in 1862 by architect Antonio Cipolla to bestow a monumental appearance to the State Bank of newly united Italy, the building – currently undergoing major restoration – conceals a unique pictorial treasure beneath its vaults. These are the grotesques by Gaetano Lodi. He chose this genre, so beloved by Raphael, to celebrate the spirit of the Italian Renaissance in the area between Piazza Cavour and Via Farini.
