In the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school years, the educational initiative The Porticoes of a Thousand Colours was launched as part of the DISCOVER OUR PORTICOES – HERITAGE FOR ALL project, financed by Law 77/2006”Special measures for the protection and use of Italian properties and elements of cultural, landscape and environmental interest, included in the World Heritage List

The World Heritage Porticoes Office has designed a series of itineraries to discover the UNESCO values embodied by the Bologna Porticoes, themselves added to the World Heritage List of Outstanding Universal Value in 2021. The course was developed in collaboration with Senza Titolo Srl, an organisation that runs educational projects aimed at bringing the public closer to the languages and practices of art. The initiatives serve as educational tools for people of all ages, using methodologies based on active involvement and practical laboratory work.

The educators involved participated in a training session led by the staff of the World Heritage Porticoes Office. Activities focused on two macro areas: UNESCO and its values (Convention for the Protection of World Heritage, Outstanding Universal Value, the 10 selection criteria, the nomination process) and the Porticoes of Bologna (historical, architectural and artistic aspects, and also their value as places of meeting and exchange). The operators were provided with documentation material for the preparation of the sequence of activities, which underwent in-depth analysis and comparison in a final meeting.

This educational project consisted of three modules.

  1. Classroom introduction to UNESCO values and the porticoes as such.
  2. Visit to the Porticoes in the city
  3. Laboratory activities

Classes involved: Primary School (3rd, 4th and 5th years) and Secondary school 1st and 2nd grade.
