The UNESCO World Heritage site “The Porticoes of Bologna” comprises 12 componnets, selected from the over 62 kilometers of porticoes that make Bologna unique in the world. This series represents an extraordinary example of an ancient architectural model that was never abandoned; on the contrary, it evolved over time alongside the city’s transformations, leading to its inscription on the World Heritage List in 2021.
The chosen sections reflect the richness and variety of the Bolognese portico system, which spans the entire historic center and features in every type of building: from working-class housing to aristocratic residences, as well as grand public and religious edifices.
This diversity is also mirrored in the materials and styles employed. From the 12th century to the present day, Bologna’s architecture has successfully integrated diverse construction techniques—from wood and stone to modern concrete—bearing witness to the progressive expansion of the city. Consequently, the porticoes are not merely decorative elements, but the living result of centuries of history and adaptation to the needs of the community.
